Sickle Cell Trait Testing – Why It’s Required

Sickle cell trait (SCT) is a genetic condition that usually causes no symptoms but can increase risks during intense exercise, dehydration, or high altitude. The NCAA requires all Division I and II athletes to be screened for sickle cell trait (or provide proof of prior testing) before competing, as established in their 2009–2010 policy update and still in effect today. This applies to all athletes regardless of race or ethnicity. Many colleges extend the requirement to Division III as well.

In the United States, all babies born after 1986 are routinely screened for sickle cell disease (and often trait) as part of mandatory newborn screening programs (varies slightly by state, but universal since the late 1980s/early 1990s). If you don’t have access to those records or need confirmation, testing is quick and straightforward.
